Emerging 100 of South Metro Steps It Up for Better Health in the Community

ATLANTA, GA —— On Saturday, September 29, the Emerging 100 of the South Metro Chapter of 100 Black Men launched its inaugural Step it Up for Better Health event with an organized group hike, rally, and health screening station at Stone Mountain Park, with support from sponsors DTLR, Streetz 94.5 FM, 1-800-Hurt-911, Revlon, Oakhurst Medical Centers, Coca-Cola, the Ludacris Foundation, The 317 Brand, Sandwiches with Sevon and Stone Mountain Park.

The Step it Up for Better Health initiative seeks to promote wellness and healthy lifestyles in the community, in alignment with the programs of the 100 Black Men of America, Inc.

Step it Up kicked off bright and early at 8:30 am with a motivational rally powered by Streetz 94.5 FM radio station near the park entrance. Representatives from DTLR and Oakhurst Medical Centers (who provided complimentary health screenings), and Thomas Williams, president of the Emerging 100 of South Metro gave remarks. Emerging 100 of South Metro member Martin Hill shared his story of how a personal health scare resulted in an ongoing journey towards better health that has resulted in weight loss of over 50 pounds. Co-sponsor Coca-Cola provided bottled water, Powerade, and tote bags for participants. Following the rally, attendees scaled the mountain at their own pace.

More than 75 participants completed the trek up and down the mountain and took a giant step towards wellness. “Thank you all for the opportunity. It’s always been a goal to walk up that mountain, and you guys helped me reach it,” said Mike Smoak, co-chair of the Emerging 100 and member of the 100 Black Men of South Metro. The Emerging 100 of South Metro hope to make Step it Up for Better Health an annual event.
